RALEIGH, N.C. — Tropical Storm Alberto swirled off the South Carolina coast packing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) on Sunday, a day after becoming the first tropical storm of the 2012 hurricane season, the National Hurricane Center said.

The Miami-based center said Alberto was centered about 105 miles (170 kms) southeast of Charleston, S.C., at 2 a.m. EDT and moving toward the southwest near 6 mph (9 kph). it added that a tropical storm watch continued for South Carolina from the Savannah River to the South Santee River.

Forecasters have advised coastal interests from Georgia to North Carolina’s Outer Banks to track the storm, citing the potential for dangerous surf.

The hurricane center issued its initial tropical storm watch for Albert on Saturday once the storm formed in the Atlantic. the official start to hurricane season is June 1, but tropical storms occasionally occur before then.

National Weather Service meteorologist Sandy LaCorte in Wilmington said projections on Saturday evening showed the storm was expected to turn to the northeast over the next several days.

She said the center of the storm was not expected to get close to the Carolinas’ coast, though forecasters said dangerous surf conditions were possible along both the South Carolina and Georgia coasts. the storm also was about 145 miles (235 kilometers) east of Savannah, Ga., early Sunday.

LaCorte said Alberto was expected produce increased waves at beaches in the Carolinas. there also is a high risk of rip currents along North Carolina’s Outer Banks, and a moderate risk along the southeastern beaches and the entire South Carolina coast.

The weather service also said isolated and scattered rain showers are expected along the coast of the Carolinas over coming days.

A forecast map by the hurricane center predicts that the storm would drift toward the open sea off the Mid-Atlantic region by midweek, but it’s difficult to accurately predict a storm’s path days in advance.

The 2 a.m. EDT Sunday advisory said Alberto, meanwhile, was expected to turn toward the west-northwest later in the day and then head to the north and northeast sometime Monday.

Little change in strength was forecast over the coming 48 hours, the center added, noting the maximum sustained winds were at 50 mph (85 kph) with higher gusts.

Forecasters added that tropical storm force winds extended about 45 miles (75 km) out from the center of Alberto.

NAACP, 1199 SEIU, National Action Network To Lead Silent March Down Fifth Ave This Father’s Day

Posted By: Admin on May 20, 2012 at 10:00 am

To fight stop-and-frisk -thousands of civil rights, labor, faith-based organizations & community leaders to join in powerful silent protest against racial profiling by NYPD-

NAACP President Benjamin Jealous, 1199 SEIU President George Gresham and Rev. Al Sharpton of the National Action network joined civil rights leaders, faith leaders, and elected officials today to announce a “silent March to end Stop-and-Frisk.” The March, to be held on Father’s Day, June 17th, will protest the discriminatory, humiliating and ineffective NYPD policy known as “Stop-and-Frisk” that affects hundreds of thousands of innocent New Yorkers, each year. "Stop-and-frisk is the most massive local racial profiling program in the country," said NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. "Stop-and-frisk sews racial division, distracts law enforcement, and needlessly humiliates hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and their families every year. it must be stopped.” NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy allows officials to stop and pat down any individual without cause or suspicion. Blacks and Latinos are nine times as likely as whites to be stopped, and the vast majority of those frisked are innocent. in 2011 alone, the NYPD stopped and questioned more than 685,000 New Yorkers. Of those, 605,000 walked away with no charges. "stop and frisk poses a real danger to our children and communities," said George Gresham, President of 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. "The NYPD’s stop and frisk policy has led to rampant racial profiling and the people of New York City must not stand for it. For the safety of all our children, we must speak out against this unjust policy. this is an issue for all people of color and all people of conscience." The tradition of silent marches for civil rights dates back to 1917, when the NAACP held the nation’s first silent march in New York City to protest lynchings, segregation and race riots in the South. That march, led by W. E. B. DuBois, led thousands silently down Fifth Avenue, and became an iconic symbol of strength in the face of injustice. "Stop-and-frisk is racial profiling and a complete violation of civil rights,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, President & Founder of the National Action Network.” we need to fight crime but we do not need a civil rights violation to fight it." Racial profiling is a concern for New Yorkers of every background because it is discriminatory and does not keep our neighborhoods safe. The murder of Trayvon Martin in Florida has underscored the tragic consequences of racial profiling. Here in New York, the killing of unarmed teenager Ramarley Graham in February shows that little has changed since the shootings of Patrick Dorismond, Amadou Diallo and Sean Bell. “The NYPD’s own data undermine many of the Bloomberg administration’s justifications for the stop-and-frisk program,” New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman said. “Contrary to the mayor and police commissioner’s assertions, the massive spike in the number of stops has done little to remove firearms from the streets. instead, it has violated the constitutional rights of millions of people and corroded the ability of communities of fathers and sons from communities of color to trust and respect the police.” City officials have repeatedly claimed that stop-and-frisk keeps guns off the street. but the NYCLU’s analysis found that the proportion of gun seizures to stops has fallen dramatically as only 780 guns were confiscated last year. this is only slightly more than the 604 guns seized in 2003, when officers made only 160,851 stops. "we of the Muslim community are grateful for the opportunity to join with the NAACP, 1199 SEIU, National Action Network, the United National Anti-War Coalition, and other activists and community leaders in a unified stance for law enforcement accountability, and against racial, ethnic, and religious profiling,” said Imam Al- Hajj Talib Abdur Rashid, President of The Islamic Leadership Council of Metropolitan New York. "The Jewish tradition teaches of the rodef, the pursuer, and teaches that one must intervene if they witness inequality, ‘lo tamod al dam reaha.’ You are instructed to pursue justice and peace," said Louis Cholden-Brown of the Jewish Theological Seminary. "I am here today to say in a loud and clear voice: stop and frisk does not stop crime, stop and frisk is a crime!" "As Transgender women we are constantly stopped and frisked just because of they way we express our gender identity, and because they presume we are engaging in sex work, when often times we are just going to the corner store to buy milk or something for the house," said Jessica Guaman from the LGBTQ Justice Project of make the Road NY. "and if they find condoms in our bags, this is automatically considered proof of prostitution. These practices hurt our communities, and our trust with the police. They have to stop" "we need to make sure that Trayvon Martin’s death not be in vain," said Hector Figueroa, Secretary-Treasurer of SEIU Local 32BJ, "The lessons learned from this horrific incident require us to fight to ensure that no one, including our young people, across the city ever feel targeted because of the color of their skin." A week to truly savor Belmont Shore

Posted By: Admin on May 19, 2012 at 10:00 pm

SUMMER! STROLL & SAVOR: We’re walking around in our swim trunks and flip-flops right now, looking around for our Hawaiian Punch hat, because summer starts today.

We thought it would never get here after that interminable winter, with the temperature plunging into the low 50s. It even rained a couple of times. We’re only now snapping out of that Swedish sunshine-deprivation depression thing.

and snapping out of it in a big way, because that annual harbinger of summer, the Belmont Shore Stroll & Savor, returns to second Street from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and Thursday.

Second Street is packed with some of the city’s finest restaurants, and you can sample all of them – if you’ve got a stomach the size of a duffel bag.

The event is all explained in the title. one strolls up and down the Shore’s business district savoring the offerings of more than 40 establishments, from the Acapulco Inn to Yogurtland.

It’s all great stuff, so don’t fill up on bread before you come down. A sampling of the samples includes baked lamb from Boubouffe Grill, Domenico’s famous salad, chicken/bacon/garlic cream sauce crepes from La Creperie Cafe, pulled pork from Lucille’s BBQ, salsa verde shrimp tacos from Rubios, Shannon’s spectacular tri-tip sandwiches, chocolate porter chili from the glorious new arrival Simmzy’s, gelato from Aroma di Roma and a lot more.

To keep you moving along, you get live music, with Dad & Company performing tonight and the Long Beach Blues Army playing Thursday.

Food and beverage samples range from one to three tickets each, and you can buy those on the spot for $10 for a book of 12 tickets in front of Chase Bank, smack in the middle of things at 5200 second St.

FAYE FEST: In our column last week about the passing of Faye Willard, of Dick & Faye’s Cafe Bistro, we said we noted that a public memorial was being planned.

The plans are made. A celebration of Faye’s life will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the Bull Bar at the site of the old Bistro Cafe, 3316 E. Seventh St.

It’s an odd time, because no one ever visited Dick & Faye’s at such an ungodly early hour, but most of the old locals are of the age where they like to get home early now.

As part of the memories, Faye’s daughter Janet Lund will be buying pitchers of domestic brew and providing the famous 10-cent hot dogs.

BACK TO THE SHORE: You’re thinking, “After tonight and Thursday night’s Stroll & Savor, all my Belmont Shore needs will be seen to for the month.”

You’ve never been so wrong. That’s why you pay us to do the thinking.

While we enjoy food immensely (to employ an unfortunate adverb), we will push a food-laden buffet into a ravine if it stands between us and a good deal.

(On Mother’s Day, we went to Best buy and bought our wife, Mamie Eisenhower, a new TV for her opulently appointed salon. Our cost: $199. you lose money not buying a 32-inch HDTV for $199. we slapped a $3,200 price tag on it and told her there will be no Christmas this year.)

Happily, nothing’s standing between you and great deals other than whatever’s between you and Belmont Shore’s second Street this weekend.

Right on the heels of Stroll & Savor comes the Belmont Shore Spring (there goes our proclamation that summer is here) Sidewalk Sale, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Up and down the street, your local shopkeepers will put their business on the street at Crazy Eddie prices.

Go now and get that Christmas buying out of the way, unless, like us, you already took care of that on Mother’s Day.

OKC Thunder: Q&A with Lakers assistant coach Quin Snyder

Former Missouri coach Quin Snyder is a first-year assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers after previously spending time as an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Snyder had a successful stint (94-56) with the Austin Toros of the NBA Developmental League after leaving Missouri, where he nearly led the Tigers to their first Final Four, losing the 2002 NCAA West Regional final to Oklahoma.

Q: how curious were you about yourself in terms of being able to coach in the NBA?

A: “There was a period where it’s natural to wonder about some of the differences in the game and there’s definitely an adjustment period. As far as my comfort level within the job, the thing that really agreed with me initially was the simplicity of just coaching. There was more time spent literally on basketball, and I enjoy that.”

Do you feel you can impact a player’s life as much in the NBA as in college?

“That’s interesting. when I was in the D-League, some of them were NBA players who were assigned. others were great college players at a point in their lives of trying to get somewhere. It was just basketball for them, too. they didn’t have to go to class. As a college coach, frankly you’re responsible for that. if somebody doesn’t go to class, it’s on you. if someone makes a mistake off the court, it’s on you. in that regard, you don’t have a chance to impact as many lives off the court (in pro ball), but in other ways you have an opportunity to do so on the court.”

Voodoo Extreme – News, Screenshots, Videos, Reviews and More!

Posted By: Admin on May 15, 2012 at 8:00 am

Tuesday cheers to you and yours!

So. Diablo. Diablo III that is. Coming out in just two weeks. Does anyone else feel like may 15th is a bad time to release any other games, say, like Max Payne 3? Granted all the console gamers out there will need something to do while all of their friends practically rapture into the world of Sanctuary.

Obviously if you’ve been reading my updates, one might say I am a fan of the Diablo franchise. I am eagerly awaiting the appointed time at which the files I have already installed will unlock and grant access to one of the largest time sinks of the coming decade. I am concerned however with how Blizzard is going to handle the launch-day mania. as we are all too painfully aware, Diablo III is an online-only game, and I can only imagine the kind of infrastructure they would need to have in place to properly deal with everyone trying to log-in, unlock game files, etc. come 12:01 AM Pacific. If the open beta weekend was any indication – there will be problems. I am hopeful that little stress test taught them everything they need to know in order to assure a hassle free launch; I am also a cautious and practical man, and have scheduled the 18th off of work to give them time to work out any launch day jitters.

Anyone scheduling any cool launch parties or planning any epic excuses to get out of work? Also if you are not a fan of Diablo, thank you for your patience with some Diablo-heavy updates.

And just for fun, I thought this was a really well done Skyrim IRL type video. Enjoy.

Preview: NBA Eastern Conference semifinals

Posted By: Admin on May 13, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Prediction: while the Celtics have been here, won that, the 76ers are playing in the conference semifinals for the first time since 2003. that journey is about to end. Celtics in six.

(2) Heat vs. (3) Pacers

First round: Heat 4-1 over Knicks; Pacers 4-1 over Magic.

Season series: Heat 3-1.

Key stats: LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh averaged 63.8 points in the first round, accounting for nearly 66 percent of the Heat’s average scoring output of 96.8 points.

Outlook: in the NBA equivalent of a “Hoosiers”-type mismatch, the Pacers hope to play the role of tiny Milan High School to the Heat’s powerful Muncie Central. The small-market Pacers certainly don’t have the stars to match James, Wade and Bosh. Thankfully, the low-key franchise also didn’t hold a welcome party for free agent David West before the season, complete with pyrotechnics, smoke and a runway. The Pacers must avoid the just-happy-to-be-here mindset after rolling over the Magic, which wasn’t much of a feat with Dwight Howard sidelined. The Pacers, who had five players average double-figure scoring during the regular season, will need more than good balance to win this series. Center Roy Hibbert, their only All-Star this season, must play even bigger than his 7-foot-2 frame, and Danny Granger and West will have to come up big in the fourth quarter.

Prediction: This isn’t Hollywood. Heat in six.

5 inducted into World Golf Hall of Fame

Posted By: Admin on May 10, 2012 at 5:00 pm

The 2012 Class of the World Gold Hall of Fame was inducted Monday night at the St. Johns County Convention Center. Peter Alliss, Dan Jenkins, Phil Mickelson, Sandy Lyle and Hollis Stacy reminisced on their career highlights, the important roles their families played, and thanked friends and colleagues who were instrumental in their success. Ceremonies emcee Dan Hicks of NBC and The Golf Channel introduced PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.

“The World Golf Foundation, appreciates your support for the first Tee and the other initiatives that have come about because of the coming together of the golf organizations at this Hall of Fame almost 20 years ago,” said Finchem.

Mickelson’s career is highlighted by four major championship titles: the 2004, 2006 and 2010 Masters; and the 2005 PGA Championship. He has 36 additional PGA Tour wins. “You can’t start fulfilling your dreams until you dream big. You need a lot of people along the way to help you out, and we’ve all had people help us along the way. We’ve all had big dreams from the start,” Mickelson told the packed room.

Mickelson remembered dreaming as a kid, before he could walk, about playing the game of golf.

“I would watch my dad hit balls in the backyard dreaming of being able to stand up so I could hit my first shots. And he gave me a cut down club when I finally could walk, and I would hit balls in our backyard over and over for hours on end. I would sleep with those clubs at night, and I would dream about the game of golf,” he said.

Regarded as one of America’s greatest sportswriters, Jenkins’ chronicles of Texas golf in the 1950s, specifically of Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, are legendary. The author of several best selling sports books, he started working for Golf Digest in 1985.

“To justify my inclusion in this terrific society, I went back and looked at everybody who’s in it and did some statistics. It turns out that I have known 95 of these people when they were living. I’ve written stories about 73 of them. I’ve had cocktails and drinks with 47 of them, and I played golf with 24 of them. so I want somebody else to try and go up against that record,” said Jenkins Jenkins won the 1995 PGA Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award from the PGA of America and has been inducted into the Texas Sports and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Halls of Fame.

“Just to drop a few names, some of the people I’ve played golf with were Ben Hogan about 40 times, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and even Babe Zaharias,” he said.

Sandy Lyle has won 29 tournaments worldwide, including 18 on The European Tour and three other PGA Tour titles. His victory at the 1985 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s made him the first British winner since Tony Jacklin in 1969.

He broke new ground at the 1987 Players Championship, defeating Jeff Sluman in a playoff to become its first international champ. Lyle made history again at the 1988 Masters, making birdie on the 18th hole to become Augusta National’s first British winner.

“The Hall of Fame, a great honor. I just can’t say enough words about it,” said Lyle.

Lyle couldn’t finish his induction remarks without remembering old friend and competitor Seve Ballesteros who was inducted into the hall in 1999.

“Now, I think tonight on this very day, Seve died one year earlier. I first met him at the age of 16, and it was in a pro-am. I was the amateur, and he was the pro, only one-year difference, and Seve shot 74, I did 71, and he said, “you good player.” I said, “thank you, Seve. I’ll see you in about a couple years’ time.”

During her 26-year LPGA career, Hollis Stacy rang up 18 victories. From 1977 to 1983, she registered 82 top-10 finishes.

“I am here because 13 courageous women had a dream of starting a Tour. they formed the LPGA over 60 years ago. I am indebted to those women,” she said. Stacy’s career was defined by her USGA events. She won U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship titles from 1969– 71 and remains the only player ever to win that event three consecutive times.

“When I joined the Tour in ‘74 I had visions of seeing golfers holding trophies at the end of the week. I learned early, win some, lose a lot… Golf mirrors life,” she said. “We learn by our mistakes, our three putts at the wrong time, our bogeys coming in, that 9 at the last. It’s all the same. Winning is a result of learning from our mistakes.”

The son of Percy Alliss, one of the finest players of his generation, Alliss turned professional at 15. He won 23 tournaments worldwide during the 1950s and ‘60s, including three British PGA Championships. He was selected for every great Britain Ryder Cup team except one from 1953 to 1969.

“I’ve had people say, which part of your life did you enjoy the most. I’ve enjoyed it all because I’ve never really worked very hard at it, just dear old Gary Player will absolutely guarantee that he never saw me out practicing,” said Alliss.

Alliss, known as “The Voice of Golf,” began his commentating career with the BBC in 1961 at The Open Championship won by Arnold Palmer at Royal Birkdale. in 2011, he broadcast his 50th consecutive Open Championship. He had high praise for the World Golf Hall of Fame.

“This facility is most remarkable I’ve seen in the world of golf. It’s sort of golf’s answer to Disney World… The museum, the golf courses, the hotel, when you come in from the main road, the way the gardens are prepared, the trees, the staff, the volunteers, it’s quite magical. And I’ve seen a fair bit of stuff in my time. but it is truly amazing the way they’ve done the museum, the way it’s encapsulated all these personal bits and pieces of memorabilia. It’s quite stunning. quite stunning.”
